Sometimes, you may have a doorway without the door in your home but want to separate two rooms or divide one large to two small spaces. In such a case, you don’t need to install the traditional door if you don’t like these conventional solutions or don’t want to lose too much space it requires.
There are a few tips to cover a doorway without a door. They will help you to decorate your home and increase your privacy at the same time. Some of the alternatives are temporary, and you can change them from time to time to refresh the interior of your home without much expenses. Let’s see.
How to Cover a Doorway Without Door
1. Curtains
Many people avoid installing doors inside their houses and choose some more elegant and sophisticated solutions. Curtains are an inexpensive and convenient option because you can change them often. That way, you will get the entire new interior every time you hang the new draperies.
Moreover, you can use a different design for every season or special occasion to separate a particular space. Use curtains to add some color to space or to cover an old doorway.
Plus, curtains are useful for new mothers who need some privacy but want to supervise their babies at the same time. On the other hand, it is not the best idea if you have a big family and need some privacy in your room.
Place them pulled over the doorway, but open them once you decide to share your space. Keep in mind that you need a thick model for office usage, but it will be enough to buy thin curtains for your home.
The installation is not complicated, except you need to hang hardware above the door frame. That makes this option practical for everyone.
Pick out the desired fabric and pattern according to your style and slide it open or close whenever you decide to limit visibility. There is also an option to use insulated draperies for extra sound dampening.
2. Bookcase
If you want to avoid installing a door between your dining and living room, you can separate them with an elegant bookcase. That way, you will transform your doorway into a useful and unique place.
Except for getting additional storage space, you will enchase visual appearance to your room. At the same time, you will keep the existing opening so that you can install the door whenever necessary.
It’s up to you to place the bookcase in front of the room or go a step ahead, add hinges to one side, and transform it into the door.
3. Roman shades
In most cases, you will use Roman shades to cover your windows. However, you can install them in your doorway instead of the door. You can find lovely models made of bamboo or decorative fabrics.
In fact, it is an excellent solution since you can slide it down whenever you want some privacy or up when needed. Another option is to hang this cover over a transparent glass door for more privacy.
The huge advantage is that there are different models in various sizes available on the market. So, you can pick out the shade that fits your doorway entirely. Plus, you won’t have any maintenance problem since you can wash most of them in the washing machine.
4. Shoji sliding doors
If you are into the Japanese style of life, you can use their tradition and install Shoji sliding door between two rooms. It will provide enough privacy, beautify your space, and let some light inside.
Since they are made of rice paper, these doors are lightweight, and you can effortlessly slide it in and out when needed.
5. Barn doors
It is an excellent alternative for you if you are the type of person who wants to avoid traditional hinged doors. Additionally, this sliding door will save up a lot of space, which is essential if you have a small room.
If you choose a model similar to the wall’s color, the entire ambiance will become elegant and beautiful. Be creative and decorate and paint your barn door according to your preferences, including folk art.
The advantage of this choice is in uncomplicated installation. So, choose it and take advantage of its versatile and rustic decor.
6. Accordion-style divider
It is an excellent idea for a doorway without the door. Place an elegant accordion-style divider between rooms you want to separate. It will depend on your preferences to install one or to choose a movable option.
7. Folding screens
In my opinion, it is the best possible alternative to cover a doorway without a door, especially if you live in an open pan apartment. It is also an excellent choice for your too large living room. Place the large folding screen in the middle and put a table with a vase full of flowers next to it to beautify your space.
Since there are different types of this product, you can find the one made of fabrics, wood, or plastic, depending on your style and the design of your home. You can also pick out a specific pattern, color, and size.
Keep in mind that you need a large model to cover an average doorway appropriately. The advantage of this solution is its mobility. That means you can move your portable cover whenever required. Plus, you can fold it when you don’t need to cover a whole doorway or use it only occasionally, depending on your needs.
If you are skillful and have the necessary tools, making a folding screen can be an easy DIY project. Use some old shutters or even windows, add repurposed or new hinges, and organize your own model.
8. Beaded strings
It was the most popular method in the ‘70s and ‘80s. However, many people still prefer this option of covering a doorway without a door. Since there are various types of beads, you can pick out the best shape and color options for your interior.
The disadvantage of this door cover is the lack of privacy it can provide. Beads are often transparent and won’t offer any soundproofing.
On the other hand, stylish beaded strings will beautify your space without higher costs. Use this cover to separate your living or dining area, but avoid hanging it in your bathroom.
9. Glitter tassels
Glitter tassels are a stylish and space-saving alternative to the doors. Purchase them in the local store and hang over your doorway. It is an elegant way to beautify your space and get a bit of privacy when needed.

There is a really unique idea to use instead of the door. This free-standing wall installation will fit almost every design and look beautiful and stylish in most homes. Place this wall between rooms you want to separate the way to obstruct a view and create two doorways on either side at the same time.
12. Rugs
When you want to add some color and different texture to your home but despise curtains, you can be unique and hang a rug over your doorway. It will reduce the sound coming from other rooms and provide quality and elegancy into the home design.
13. Ropes
When you want to divide a large space without installing the door, you can use some ropes as a stylish but inexpensive solution. Make a DIY rope curtain, add a coffee table with small decorations on it, and add some plants around. That way, you will create some kind of valance in an open concept living room.
14. Quilts or painted canvas
Pick out old handmade quilts to cause an unexpected effect. Another option is a painted canvas that will add an artistic touch to the entire interior. When you frame it with trim or molding, you will get a real piece of art that everyone will enjoy.
15. Textiles
In fact, any hanging textile can replace the door when you don’t need absolute privacy and silence in the room. Pick out an elegant, colorful handmade piece to add a little more personality to your home than any door can provide.
16. Doorway Without the Door
In some cases, leaving the doorway without the door is the best possible option. Choose the arch of the desired shape and frame it with wood or plaster ornaments. That way, you will get the illusion of a bright room and plenty of additional space.
Summary
Most people prefer using curtains instead of the door once they decide to remove it for various reasons. However, there are many other options you can consider to make your home stylish and cozy. Pick out one of them based on your preferences and style, but always keep in mind their cost. Some of the solutions offered are free of charge, but you need to pay a lot for others, especially if they require installation.
